It is impossible to believe, but at one point, these chairs were like two perfect plums. We first discovered them in New York City Chelsea Flea Market, one cold Sunday morning, in the early 90s when my husband (then boyfriend) and I were recovering from a live Addiction hangover. The flea market was a place you wandered through when you had nothing better to do and little energy to do it. We could not believe we discovered these Knoll knock-offs and that they could be ours for 200 bucks. They were groovy, urbane, and they epitomized who we wanted to be.
I let the chair dry completely overnight, then went back the next day to touch up any areas that needed more coverage. I also did another coat on the seat bottom, thinking it would get the most use, then let it completely dry again overnight. There is a slight color variation across the fabric, but nothing that is really noticeable or troublesome, and there is no white showing through the new blue paint. If you have a chair with darker upholstery fabric, or a bright obnoxious print, you will mostly likely need to either choose a darker paint color, or apply more coats to get the coverage you need.
A big mistake people make, is not considering how a fabric or leather may age over time. Check the label and ask questions at the showroom to find out about the material content and cleaning needs, then think about how much maintenance you are prepared to do to protect your selection. Will you still love the leather as it develops a nice patina from everyday living? Will you vacuum the upholstery fabric regularly? Will you close the drapes when away or not using a room to avoid some of the fading that naturally occurs from exposure to sunlight?
Then, last summer, Instagram helped rise them from the grave. I was idly scrolling through my feed one August Saturday afternoon when I saw the most magnificent chair that made my thumb freeze and my heart explode. The price slayed me too but I was already a goner). I clicked on the account bio and found out that not only was Enitan Vintage located in Brooklyn, but they were five minutes away. I sent them a DM and by noon the next day, we had an appointment.
One of the initial things you will notice about the Titan is just how firm the padding is, both on the backrest and the lower piece that you actually sit on. I figure it is kind of like buying a mattress depending on your basic comfort preference, you could either love or hate how immovable the Titan foam is. Personally, I have fallen in love with the firmness, and it feels insanely durable, like it’s going to last for years and years, standing up to repeated sittings and general daily abuse. I have had countless other desk chairs that simply lost their shape after a year or so, some even after a few months. The Titan seems like it is going to hold up for much, much longer than that. That estimation is bolstered by how damn sturdy this thing is. The rollers are top quality and allow easy movement, even under the Titan significant weight.
Upholstery is the materials which include fabric, padding, webbing, and springs that make up the soft coverings of chairs, sofas, and other furniture. The process began in the Middle Ages and grew in popularity during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Over the years, a wide variety of materials have been used, from hay to horsehair to wool. Modern upholstered items use metal springs and foam for greater durability. While the interior materials may not be visible, they make a big difference in whether the piece is comfortable . And though fabric can always be changed and may need to be, depending on wear and tear choosing high quality inner layers will help make sure the piece will last for years to come.
The upholstery fabric for a new sofa or armchair is a big investment you do not want to be second guessing it a few months after the piece arrives on your doorstep. Choose the wrong material and you will find yourself battling snags and stains. Make a mistake on the color or pattern, and the whole room suffers (or you will wind up splurging to have the piece reupholstered). So before you pick your new upholstery fabric, read on to find out what you should consider in terms of durability, comfort, and style. Here is how to zero in on a fabric choice you will be happy to live with for years.
