After my husband and I moved in together, we were still using chairs and tables that we collected during our studies and first jobs. I contributed the dining room chairs and my husband the table and they were an odd match. I had auctioned my chairs from my parent country club when it was closed down for. When ever you had to sit on them for a longer dinner with friends they would become quite uncomfortable. We decided it was time to invest into a new dining room set. My husband already knows me so well, that it went without saying that any chair entering our home had to be a wool chair.
A comfortable chair will have support in the right places. For example, extra padding at the bottom to support your lower back, and at the top for your head. It will have a leg rest that supports your whole lower leg down to your heel and at the same height as your seat. The chair should be soft, but not so soft that you can feel the frame. It is important to make sure the chair measurements are a good fit for your body. Think about, seat height if a chair is too high, your feet wo not be able to touch the floor, and this will put too much pressure on your back. Your legs could also start to feel uncomfortable.
Some types of vinyl are stretchy so could be used on pressure relief. However, this is not recommended as vinyl is thicker and not as stretchy as VP, so are not as good for pressure relief and can feel hard when sat on VP fabrics, like Dartex, are good material for pressure relief. It has a four way stretch system that makes it very flexible when used on top of a gel cushion. When pressure relief is used, we always recommend VP on the user contact areas including the seat (and sometimes backrest), with more hard wearing fabrics or vinyl on the rest of the chair.
Just as you would with any other product, try out as many chairs as you can there is nothing to stop you walking into several retailers to try out different chairs, even if you decide to have one built for you. These are a network of local centres that provide independent advice. Most are charities and may not sell chairs, but they are a good place to start to understand the range and styles offered, and to test out chairs on loan from manufacturers. Some retailers may even come to your home, so it is worth exploring that as an option.
Check if there are any weight restrictions for the chair you are considering. If the chair is not built for your weight, the frame may become unstable, so you may be better off buying a special heavy duty chair. Some manufacturers have chairs in extra large sizes (often called bariatric chairs) that you can buy off the shelf, or you can order a custom made one. Even standard sized riser recliner chairs are generally quite big, so you need to measure up and ensure you have enough space to accommodate it in its fully reclined position. You also need to make sure you have a mains power socket nearby.
After some Googling I learned that that Enitan Vintage is owned, the actor who played Chris Parlow on The Wire and more recently, pimp Larry Brown on The Deuce. Despite Gbenga transforming into complicated characters on acclaimed television shows, I learned that we had some stuff in common: He is from Maryland (same), is a huge Prince fan (who is not, but I have more pictures of Prince saved on my phone than of my own children) and we both have feelings about African fabrics (I can not part with a torn African mini skirt that I bought in the East Village in the early 90s). I knew that Gbenga and his team were the ones to make our once perfect plums sweet again.
When we moved to Brooklyn in preparation for daughter number two, once again, the chairs came with. But this time, they went right into storage. With a new apartment and a second daughter on the way, spending several thousand dollars to reupholster two chairs we spent 200 dollars on was absolutely out of the question. But so was parting with them. And to tell you the truth, if we had any leftover creative energy at that point in our lives, it went toward themed sleepovers and inventive costumes, not furniture. So into the cellar they went, to live amongst shoe sized roaches and High School Musical themed Boogie Boards. They made one more move with us and never supported another tush for the next 13 years.
